Types of Perfume

Once upon a time, a woman was expected to have a signature scent. Nowadays, we are more likely to treat fragrance as an accessory, changing our perfume daily - or even more often - to suit our busy lives and shifting moods.
But sometimes, too much choice can lead to confusion. If you're like most women, you have multiple perfume bottles cluttering your vanity table. They taunt you every morning as

you get dressed, with the simple yet silent demand, "Who do you want to be today?"

To help you cut through the clutter, we've created this brief guide to the major fragrance categories, with suggestions for where to wear each one.

Citrus

Infused with the tangy essence of citrus fruits, these perfumes are lively and energetic. They are best enjoyed as a daytime delight, just the thing to wake you up in the morning before you've had that second coffee. Wear a citrus perfume to meet your girlfriends for brunch, brighten a baby shower, or ride your bicycle to the organic market.

Floral
Sweet and romantic, these scents are the "good girls" of the fragrance aisle. Florals are sometimes single note, but generally combine the scents of various flowers to create a classic feminine appeal. Spritz on a floral when you want to show off (or fake) your sweet-and-girly side -- when meeting your boyfriend's parents comes to mind. These scents are also appropriate at church, the ballet, or your best friend's wedding, especially if you've got your eye on an eligible groomsman.

Fruity
Like a cheerleader with a wicked side, fruity perfumes are fresh and spicy. These fragrances please the nose with the bright and familiar smells of apple, peach, berry, mango and other juicy fruits, often blended with florals to create a compelling aroma. Pretty without being overwhelming, these perfumes are ideal for a movie-and-dinner first date. Just apply sparingly.

Green
Smelling of fresh leaves and newly-mown grass, the green fragrances are a natural and energetic group. These scents tend toward the unisex, so are best left on the shelf when you're dressing to impress a hot date. Save them for daytime instead, when their sporty, modern appeal makes them a great fit for any casual or outdoor gathering. Wear one to cheer on your favorite football team, at the golfing range, or on a flea market amble with friends.

Oceanic
Oceanic perfumes are a modern invention, first appearing with Christian Dior's Dune in 1991. These scents use a blend of synthetic compounds to evoke natural aromas such as mountain air, ocean spray or clean linen. Crisp and fresh, they are an ideal choice for job interviews, when you want your perfume to say, "I'm clean, efficient and won't stink up the joint if hired."

Oriental
Think of oriental perfumes as the fragrance equivalent of cleavage and a killer pair of stilettos. Exotic and distinctly feminine, these sensual blends feature an earthy, animalistic base scent such as musk or ambergris, often combined with warm notes such as amber. (When combined with florals, these scents are called "florientals"). The effect is a bold yet mysterious perfume that makes a big entrance, tosses back a few martinis, and leaves with phone numbers in her pocket. Wear one when you want to seduce, whether it's a third date or just a rare night out without the kids.

Spicy
Sugar and spice and everything nice, that's what these perfumes smell like. Uncap one and be transported to your mom's kitchen - if your mom was the type who baked cinnamon rolls and gingerbread from scratch. With notes of cloves, ginger, cinnamon, cardamon and pepper, spicy perfumes are comforting and alluring in an old-fashioned way. Wear one to your next parent-teacher meeting, or at lunch with that handsome officemate who you wouldn't mind sharing pastry with.

Woody (Chypre)
Woody scents are built on base notes of bark and moss, conjuring winding forest paths. While more unisex than other fragrance categories, that's not to say these scents are masculine. They evoke a particular brand of no-nonsense femininity. Think Marion in Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Katharine Hepburn in any movie. This strong and classic appeal translates well to the corporate office, too. Wear one to your next performance review.

3 Tips on Choosing the Right Perfume for You

With the thousands of fragrances in the market, it can sometimes be tricky to choose the one that is perfect for your taste, personality, the occasion, and other factors. Check out the following basic tips that you may find useful when choosing and even wearing the perfect perfume for you:

Determine your budget -Perfumes are priced in a very big range, from very inexpensive colognes to luxurious designer brands. Determining your budget or the money you are prepared to spend beforehand will help narrow down the choices and will save you a lot of time.

Know what particular smell you want and go for it -Decide on what type of fragrance you want based on what use the perfume would be to you. For instance, is it for special occasions? Is it to please or seduce a lover? Is it for everyday wash and wear? If you plan to please someone, make sure to research on the particular fragrances he or she likes. If you want it to be an everyday whiff you can wear to work or school, you may want to buy a lighter and fresher scent. If it’s for big parties and formal events, choose a perfume that makes a stronger impact by blending well with your body chemistry.Other factors like the weather or season are also important to consider. For instance, if you live in a very humid setting, floral fragrances with a woody or musky base often complement the sultry weather. If you’re often surrounded by a lot of people in near proximity, don’t choose a very strong perfume because not everyone likes perfume. Citrus, sea breeze and other herb and floral fragrances are often fresh and rejuvenating, perfect for someone always on the go. If you will be out on a date and want to heighten the romance, choose a scent that is a bit stronger but not overpowering. Usually oriental spices project confidence and sophistication. Meanwhile, aromatic blends are perfect for men who like to smell like a true man exuding with machismo and security.

Examine carefully before buying -When you’ve finally narrowed down your choices and you’re ready to go to a perfume shop, don’t forget to carefully examine each perfume you fancy before getting ahead of yourself and purchasing. Take note that your nose can only handle so much and testing 20 perfumes consecutively will prove to be futile. Before you start spraying a perfume on your wrist, spray it first on a card or paper and decide if you like it. If not, move on to the next. Once you find a scent you think is perfect, start testing it on your body. Apply a small amount on your wrist or at the back of your arm. Sometimes the saleslady will offer to apply some in her own skin and have you smell it. This is a no-no because each of us reacts to perfumes in different ways. Make sure the perfume is perfect for you by putting it on your own skin. Wait for a few minutes because fragrances start to grow on you and smell different after a while.

5 Tips For Storing Your Fragrances

Fragrance, like other cosmetics, has a shelf life. But unlike most makeup, it can be hard to replace, extremely expensive, and once something happens to it, there's no putting it back together. Because fragrance is so vulnerable to degradation from a number of factors, smart storage practices are important. Want to know how to keep your favorite fragrances smelling exactly as they should for as long as possible? Here's what to do....

Keep them away from temperature extremes. Most of the time, this means heat, but people who attempt to put their scents in the freezer to keep them fresh often also end up destroying the integrity of the fragrances. The best temperature is a good bit colder than a comfortable room, around 55-60 degrees. If you want the perfect conditions, try storing your stuff in a cooler.

Don't put them in your bathroom. It makes sense to put your favorite perfume on your sink, but it's actually not a good idea. Bathrooms are hot and humid, which makes them prime areas for breaking down the fragrance's molecules and introducing bacteria.

Keep your stuff in the dark. Light exposure degrades lots of molecules, including those in most fragrances. So keeping your scents somewhere with little to no light exposure is best.

Use opaque bottles. If you have to have your fragrances out on display, transfer them to frosted or wholly opaque bottles, since clear bottles allow light to affect the fragrance ingredients.

Don't leave the top off. Scents that are alcohol-based have a rapid rate of evaporation once they're exposed to air, so forgetting to seal up bottles means that your scent will dry up sooner.

How to Present Food on a Plate

Presenting food well is all part of the show that is cooking. From historical extravaganzas such as live birds that fly from a pie, to modern day garnishes with unexpected twists, food presentation is an art form. In this article, you'll have the opportunity to explore some of the more modern ways to present food.

Steps
Start at the foundation. Selecting the right plates, cutlery, glasses and linen will enhance the overall appearance of the dish upon the table. The dish itself should add appeal and interest to the food without detracting from the food. Often chefs rely on plain colours, especially white, to set off the food. Aside from colour, there is a wide range of shapes and styles to choose from too and if you don't already have interesting plates, many can be sourced very cheaply. Some are practical, some are more decorative and some are conservatively formal.

When looking for interesting tableware, don't go past Asian grocery stores, craft or flea markets, antique stores and Middle Eastern wares. You can find some very interesting curios from all of these sources.

Also consider if the plate size is right for the dish; a small portion on a large plate can work for the artistically minded diner, but some guests may equally be unimpressed and feel cheated of sufficient food.

2.Consider the use of a separate sauce or the sauce the dish comes with (such as a curry, stew or casserole) as a form or decorative design. A soupy dish on a flat plate looks messy unless it is reined in with something such as rice, pasta or potato, or served in a suitable bowl or deep dish.

In this case, the sauce is used as part of the decoration, but some may see such an addition as just too distracting and detracts from the main point of the dish - it is hard to discern precisely what you have ordered.

3. Consider the shape of your cooked vegetables and how you serve them, which can make the simple become special. Formal vegetable cuts can add a lot of appeal, but also can add to the cook's workload. While using an ice cream scoop to make domes of food is really left to the realms of childrens' parties, you can cook and serve vegetables, desserts, pot pies and a host of other foods inside unique shaped dishes and many other fire-proof vessels.

Here you can see a saffron coloured lobster puree in a mound known as a dariole or timbale. You can

do this with rice and veggies as well easily by using a coffee mug as a mold to shape the food you wish to serve.

If you have a food processor with all the cutting elements, such as shapes and julienne cutters, then the time and effort required to produce specially shaped vegetables is considerably reduced.

4. Remember that styles change even within the space of a few years or even months, so keep up-to-date by checking out cooking magazines, cooking or foodie websites and cooking shows for current ideas. At one stage, vast and complex garnishes taking more space was attractive and at another time, towers or stacks of food was all the vogue. As these are both tricky to prepare and serve, these fashions tend not to last long and go back to the older formal styles.

A modern use of garnishes as it does not conceal the food, but is complex enough to not be ordinary.

At current focus on presentation is on the increase as more educated dinners are viewing simple presentation as low skill and effort and therefore have higher expectations, unless it is done with high art and aesthetic in mind - quality over quantity in essence. With todays technology and the goal of many chefs to make Michelin star grade food possible for cooks at home, aside from the large benefit it will bring, is that the diner expectation and skill level will be raised to match as diners seldom would be impressed with something they can make at home, unless they go to a cafe for a break from home cooking.

Minimalist garnishes still are used for higher end dining, but the portions are often balanced to reflect that - nouvelle cuisine reincarnated if you will.

Different serving vessels or materials for serving food are increasing popular as Changed trends in food presentation can also be a reliable indicator of whether a cafe or restaurant has moved with the times!

Old fashioned as glass and steel are in food, they are being used more frequently.

5. Consider how to present the main portion in relation to the side dishes. Be it a slice of pie, meat, a flan or whatever, consider where it will look best on the plate with everything else. Consider also how get best impact––the appearance and symmetry is all affected by whether the food is sliced thinly, thickly or left whole. Experiment a little and ask other people for their thoughts on what looks best. You'll soon get the idea of what works best, and there's never any harm borrowing ideas from your favourite restaurants.

Nicely presented and simple. Sauce was poured first, chicken was sliced for easier dining and a neat mound of mashed potato and fiddleheads.

6. Choose the food to suit the occasion - context is everything. Avoid feeding children's fare to adults and vice versa, or you'll have a culinary disaster on your hands.

This is great fun for kids, but certainly has a very limited range where it is appropriate.

7.  Imagine what you will serve on the plate according to the character of the diner. Some restaurants are known for serving just a meat and sauce portion with nothing else, allowing the guest to buy an additional serve of vegetables or side dishes. This can be fine in certain styles, especially formally served roasts often serve the meat plain on the plate allowing the diner to select from a range of side dishes. But it tends to be unpopular with those who want a varied, interesting meal or a who desire the feeling that they're getting a complete or value packed meal. Psychology therefore can make a huge difference and effect.
Gastro-pubs and many modern cafes and restaurants therefore are fantastic sources of inspiration to visit. Today using many of the skills of the scientific age where sous-vide is now a common method for steaks, while extraction, distillation and ice filtration for clear soups and sauces is becoming available at lower cost. Many diners today are eating more complex meals without realising by chefs and cooks reinventing common fare.

8.  Investigate simple garnishes. The food speaks for itself so the garnish should complement this be it a small side salad, sprinkling of herbs, nuts or ground spices. Above all, make it relevant and unless it is fashionable to hide the food with the garnish, opt for simple, easy elegance. Confusing diners won't win you any favours.

Sometimes garnishes confuse the meal, especially if the plate is too small. It is hard to work out if the asparagus is part of the meal, or is just an artistic garnish.

You can buy machines that make easy garnishes. You might want to train older children to make these for you as part of their pocket money; the excitement soon wears off!

Devices can make it a lot easier, but also very repetitive.

9. Choose your garnish wisely. In many cultures, flowers are an acceptable garnish or a large inedible leaf sitting underneath the food. In broader Western culture, it's recommended that nothing inedible be served on the plate. As well, since certain garnishes can affect the flavour, choose carefully.

Flowers and leaves such as this orchid can look nice, but perhaps a vase may be wiser should someone eat them by mistake, or its pollen or sap taints the food.

If you like the idea of having edible flowers, see How to choose edible flowers for more details.

In many cultures as well, fruit and vegetable carving is a highly regarded art form, while it does have its places such as buffet and smörgÃ¥sbord, they are not very common in wider presentation.

10.  Consider colours and textures. White sauce is often paired with a white meat, but sliced chicken with a white sauce, cauliflower and potato is lacking in colour and soon looks bland and unappetising. Try to add different colours and textures to spice up the interest. This is usually fairly easy to do and it can add a lot of appeal for just a little extra planning effort.

Plain food does not inspire or excite people, where it is so easy to make it more interesting.

11.   Finally, but importantly, consider what you would prefer to do within the range of your skills and time availability. Spending ages fiddling with ice, butter or vegetable garnishes can sometimes be unrealistic, unnecessary and tedious. Enjoy the cooking process as much as the eating.

An ordinary glass suddenly becomes more interesting just by using your imagination.

Tips

Read current cooking books and magazines for ideas. Your local library is a wonderful resource and many culinary magazines are now available for downloading to electronic reading devices, allowing you to read the recipes in the cooking area straight off your iPad, eReader or other device. This also enables you to decorate a table with the electronic device as a reference!

Keep all presentation of food relevant and simple. A nice formal dish is great for a celebration, but even simple meals can be improved with the addition of some herbs.

How to Defend Your Choice to Be Childless

How to Defend Your Choice to Be Childless
Children can be a source of joy for all families. It can be difficult for your relatives to understand if you have chosen not to have any - there can be many reasons. You may have made your decision and feel very comfortable with it - but your family hounds you at every gathering with "When are you going to give me grandkids?" or "What are you guys waiting for - you've been married five years!" But they're your family (or friends). Keeping compassion for your family while standing by your choice can be tough, but hopefully these suggestions will help.

Steps

Remember that your family loves you. Though the endless questions and coaxing can be wearing after awhile, the reason they badger you is that they love and want the best for you; keeping this foremost in your mind as you answer for the thousandth time can help keep you sane.

Be firm. If you don't want to continue answering for the next 25 years, you must stand firm to your choice. If you are married, tell your spouse to take the same kind but firm position as yours (get your story straight and stick to it). Being squishy and avoiding a direct answer will only give your relatives hope that you will recant one day. Say something very direct, like, "I know you may not agree or understand, but we've made the decision not to have any children. We'll let everyone know if we ever change our minds."

Give them a reason only if you wish to. The reasons for your decision are your own. You should feel compelled to explain only if you are comfortable and wish to divulge this information to your friends and family. If you don't want to tell them, don't. You don't need to justify your decision to anyone.

Allow them their feelings of disappointment or grief. Maybe you're the last son, and therefore the family's last hope to carry the family name forward to a new generation. If you have no children, your family line will end with you. This can create a lot of pressure for you, and a lot of lost dreams for your family should you choose not to have any children. Or maybe you're a woman who has simply decided that she does not wish to be a mother. Whatever your reasons are, compassionately understand that your family has dreamed of holding your children since you were a child yourself. Allow your family to grieve for their loss (yes, it is authentic grief, a loss to them of a kind) - you're not the only member of your family, and if you value your relationship with them, you must allow them their authentic sorrow. Your decision does affect them. You are entitled to live as you see fit, however, and the fact that they will be sad should not make you feel that you should become a parent if that is not what you want for your life.

Remind them that having children should be a unanimous decision. If there is any disagreement about whether or not to have children between the couple, the decision to remain child-free should prevail. Children should be brought only into homes that welcome, want and cherish them without reservation.

Give careful and honest consideration to all suggestions. If you are dead set against having children, and, for example, you are the last surviving son in your family, unless your family has a history of congenital disease or insanity, it wouldn't hurt you to hear them out if they come to you with suggestions for compromise. There may be a family suggestion as to how to carry on the family's name (you can always suggest that your sister allow her children to carry your family name instead of her husband's, for example). If you are a daughter whose family continues to press for grandchildren, this can also be particularly hard for your family to accept (all women should want children, right? So if you don't, they can have a tough time getting on board), and they may have all sorts of ideas to persuade you. You don't have to do this at every gathering, but at least give your family's thoughts an honest hearing, and consider their suggestions - it will go a long way toward them feeling less hurt and also let them feel that they had their say in the matter. There is nothing that says you must take any of their advice or suggestions. Just remember that it's your life, not theirs, and they won't have the responsibility of any progeny of yours - you will.

Tips

Correct anyone who refers to you as "childless." Say that you like to think of yourselves as "child free".

Research this topic on the web. There are many child free websites and books in the stores. The quickest way to disarm any attack on your character is to demonstrate that you know more on this topic than they do, and having an educated answer for all their questions. For example, if they call you selfish, you may wish to remind them that some people have children for selfish reasons.

Being firm early on, and then letting it be known that you really don't wish to discuss it further will make it less likely that they will pester you at every family gathering.

If all else fails, make an announcement at a holiday dinner: "I know you're all wondering why we aren't pregnant yet. Or why we don't adopt. Or whatever. We want you to know that we love you all, but having children is a very personal decision for a couple, and we have decided against it, at least for now. Every time you ask us about it, it really pressures us, and we're asking that you don't any more. Please. If there ever comes a time when we decide differently, you will be the first to know." After all, if they can't take a hint, then you shouldn't worry about them getting a little miffed by your taking matters into your own hands and being very blunt.

Notice that most examples given include "for now" or "for the time being" in them. Even if you have made up your mind, this works a lot better than just saying flatly, "it's never going to happen, give it up." Saying "for now", gives them the impression that you haven't completely made up your mind forever, and it will mollify them somewhat. If you state it in very final terms, unless you wish to say something like "I've had a vasectomy, that's the end of it" there will very likely be a lot of hysteria you will have to deal with. Avoiding that is a good thing.

There's good thinking in the old saying "never say never." Although you may believe you've made up your mind once and for all, you are a very different person at age 30 than at 20, at age 40 than at 30. Things - and people - do change over time. Things you thought you would never do, you find yourself doing easily. If you are firm, but leave the door the tiniest crack open, you will not have to eat a lot of your words later on. If you say, "Our decision to stay child free for the time being is very firm. If we make a different decision later on, we'll let you know; in the meantime, please don't ask us any more." it lets them know you don't want to discuss it further, but does leave an escape valve (which may actually serve to relieve pressure on you as well as on them).

Warnings

Even taking the small compassionate step of saying "for now" or "For the time being" may allow some small sense of hope to remain. Most people will allow that small hope to fade as the years pass and you still have no children. But there are some who will cling to that hope, and continue to badger you from time to time. It's then that you should firmly and bluntly say, "We made our decision a long time ago. We're very comfortable with it, and wish you could be, too. We're not going to change our minds, and we'd appreciate it if you would stop asking now."

How to Be Good at Improvisation

Steps
1 Often in improvisation you will be given a topic. Make sure that whatever your topic is you stay true to it and don't stray!
2 Don't try to be too funny. Yes, some slightly amusing words will get a laugh, but don't lose a good story by trying to be too funny!
3 Act natural, talk, act and sit like a normal person would (Unless, of course your character requires you to act differently.
4 Have fun, often improvement is quite scary.
5 Don't reject what the other actor beside you is saying. If they say, I'm the best soccer player ever! Then don't cut them off and say, really? I thought you were a gymnast!

Tips
One key word for improvisation is "enjoy".

Warnings
Don't try to be too funny.
